TERROIR
With its ideal climate, plentiful sunshine, steep slopes rising from 550 to 700 meters above sea level and mineral-rich soils, the Oberfurner Winery provides the perfect terroir for producing distinctive white wines that exude character.

In short: it’s a long story
We can’t claim to have invented viticulture, but its roots in Valle Isarco run deep – dating back to the 5th century BC, according to archaeological findings. Not bad at all. The ancient Romans were fans of South Tyrolean wine, and by the Middle Ages, Valle Isarco was supplying the entire empire. Even the Tyrolean sovereigns had a notable fondness for our wines. We’re fortunate to carry on a legacy steeped in history while infusing it with a fresh, modern spirit.
At the top: geographically and qualitatively
The vines face a tough but rewarding challenge in Valle Isarco, Italy’s foremost growing region for white wine. The loamy soils with slate, gneiss, granite and diorite require them to drive their roots down deep to access valuable and necessary nutrients. This struggle is what makes the resulting wines so powerful and expressive. In fact, the conditions here couldn’t be better: hours of sunshine and the Valle Isarco wind. It’s the perfect place to grow grapes.

Steep slopes, great wines
Our steep, southeast-facing slopes demand a lot from Michael: in terms of energy as well as tractor-steering skills. Nevertheless, these slopes are the perfect setting for a vineyard: they capture sunlight at just the right angle, allowing the grapes to develop optimal sugar levels. In addition, the significant temperature swings between day and night lend the grapes acidity and fresh aromas, making for great white wines.
