A good wine is like a good friend: it needs the right environment to feel comfortable. And if you treat it well, it rewards you with full flavor and character. And since we get asked this so often: how do you store wine properly? Here are the 5 best tips to make sure your favorite bottle doesn’t turn into a disappointment.
The right temperature: no rollercoaster rides!
Wine likes consistency. Constant temperature fluctuations are its worst enemy. Ideal ranges are:
Red wine: 12–18°C
White wine & rosé: 8–12°C
Sparkling wine: 6–10°C
Too warm? The wine ages too quickly and loses freshness. Too cold? The aromas fall asleep and you get less out of it than what’s inside. And please avoid sudden ups and downs – wine is not a sauna enthusiast.
Darkness: sunbathing? No, thanks!
UV rays are harmful to wine. They break down aromas and make it taste dull. So: keep it in a dark cellar or a closed cabinet. If you have a wine fridge – even better. Just avoid shining bright light on it for long periods, or you’ll get “sunburn in the glass. The light should – if at all – only be switched on when taking the bottle out.
Humidity: neither desert nor tropics
An environment that is too dry causes corks to shrink; too humid encourages mold. 60–70% humidity is perfect. This keeps the cork supple and the bottle clean. Your wine will thank you.
The right position: standing or lying down?
Lying down: a must for cork closures! This keeps the cork moist and prevents it from drying out.
Standing: perfectly fine for screw caps or synthetic corks.
Remember: a dry cork can let air in – and air is not your wine’s best friend during storage.
Keep it calm: wine is not a party animal
Wine bottles prefer peace and quiet. Constant movement and vibrations disturb the aging process. So no constant shaking in the wine rack and no storing bottles on a vibrating fridge door. Your wine would rather chill.
Conclusion: a bit of care, a bit of logic
Wine isn’t overly sensitive, but proper storage makes all the difference. A dark, cool place with the right humidity and calm surroundings – that’s its ideal habitat. If you let it mature there in peace, it will reward you with real pleasure when opened. So: store smart, enjoy better!
