The Eisack Valley and wine – that’s a long story. And like every good story, it has its ups and downs, as well as brave people who defied the odds. Today, the valley is considered a top region for fresh, mineral-driven white wines. But a lot had to happen to get there. A look back – and forward.

The Beginnings: Romans, Monasteries, and the First Vineyards

Even the ancient Romans knew that the Eisack Valley wasn’t just great for marching but also for growing excellent wine. They brought the first vines with them, and during the Middle Ages, the monasteries truly set viticulture in motion. The monks knew what was good: they terraced slopes, planted vineyards, and used the wine for both religious ceremonies and personal enjoyment. No wonder the Eisack Valley soon became known for its fine wines.

A Tough Battle: Cold, Steep Slopes, and Phylloxera

But it wasn’t easy. The steep slopes are beautiful to look at but exhausting to cultivate. Cold winters, wars, and vine diseases like the devastating phylloxera took their toll on viticulture. Many winemaking families gave up, and wine production in the valley declined.

The Comeback: Courage, Quality, and New Paths

But true Eisack Valley locals don’t give up easily. In recent decades, viticulture has reinvented itself. Instead of focusing on quantity, winemakers now prioritize quality. Grape varieties like Sylvaner, Kerner, and Grüner Veltliner have turned the valley into a white wine stronghold. Small wineries are embracing new ideas, restoring old vineyards, and adopting sustainable practices.

Today and Tomorrow: The Future of Eisack Valley Wine

The wines from this valley are more in demand than ever. Sustainability, craftsmanship, and character are at the forefront. A new generation of winemakers is bringing fresh energy, blending tradition with innovation. Cheers to the Eisack Valley – and to its wine! Prost!
